Nov. 16, 2007 Duke Women Top South Florida, 89-52 Chante Black gave Duke a much-needed lift. Black scored 16 points, Joy Cheek added 15 and No. 10 Duke beat South Florida 89-52 on Thursday night. Black and Cheek had seven points each to help Duke (2-0) take a commanding 38-15 halftime lead. South Florida (1-1) shot just 18.5 percent (5-for-27) and committed 16 turnovers in the first half. Duke junior guard Abby Waner didn't play due to a left ankle injury. She has averaged 11.5 points in 70 career games with the Blue Devils. Black missed all of last season because of a knee injury that occurred in a preseason practice. She had eight points in Duke's season-opening win Monday at Denver. Wake Forest Holds Charlotte 56-52 The Wake Forest women's basketball team stifled a late-game comeback by Charlotte to defeat the 49ers 56-52 at the Joel Coliseum on Thursday night. Sophomore guard Alex Tchangoue lead the Demon Deacons (2-0) with 16 points and 10 rebounds, marking her first double-double since Wake Forest faced Clemson in January 2007. The Deacons charged out to an early lead, holding a 22-4 advantage over the 49ers (0-4) less than ten minutes into the first half. Four Wake Forest 3-pointers helped add to the tally, including two good long range shots by senior Christen Brown. Aggressive Charlotte defense and 13 consecutive no-gos from Deacon shooters allowed the 49ers to hold the Deacons at 24 points through the final eight minutes of the half. After leading by as much as 18 points, Wake Forest entered the locker room with a two-possession advantage (24-19). Virginia Falls at South Carolina, 66-64 Lakesha Tolliver hit a jumper with less than two seconds left in the game to lift South Carolina to a 66-64 victory over visiting Virginia Thursday night at the Colonial Center. The Cavaliers were led by Paulisha Kellum, who scored a career-high 19 points and added four rebounds and three steals. The first half was an evenly matched period that featured six ties and five lead changes. After South Carolina built an early lead, Virginia fought back and a fast break layup by Lyndra Littles at the 12:11 mark gave Virginia its largest lead of the half, 16-11, and prompted a Gamecocks timeout. USC (2-0) came back on the Cavaliers (1-2) over the next minute, and a 3-pointer by Brionna Dickerson tied the score at 16 with 11 minutes left in the half. The teams traded baskets until Virginia's Kellum hit a layup with 20 seconds left, made a steal at the other end on defense and came back down the court to hit a 3-pointer as time expired to give the Cavs a five-point lead at the half, 35-31.
