CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -North Carolina (33-15 11-7 ACC) defeated Richmond (40-10), 10-0 on Thursday evening at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels touched up Tim Stauffer, one of the nation's top pitching prospects, for seven runs in the first inning and never looked back. Stauffer entered the game with an 8-2 record and 1.63 ERA, but gave up six earned runs in six innings pitched. Carolina got a strong performance from starter Scott Manshack who pitched seven scoreless innings, did not issue a walk and struck out five batters. This win was Manshack's fourth of the season and first since March 25.

The Tar Heels sent 11 batters to the plate and exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning. Consecutive singles by Greg Mangum and Chad Prosser put runners on first and second with no outs. After a line out by Jeremy Cleveland, Stauffer walked Sean Farrell, Sammy Hewitt and Chris Iannetta, bringing Mangum and Prosser home with the game's first runs. In 83.0 innings pitched coming into the game, Stauffer had walked just seven batters. With the bases loaded and one out, Chase Younts blooped an RBI single into shallow left field, scoring Farrell. Ryan Blake followed with a sharp single to left, plating Hewitt with the fourth run of the inning. Carolina would add three more runs before the inning ended, taking a seven-run lead.

Carolina added another run in the bottom of the fourth. Prosser walked and stole two bases before scoring on a line drive single off the bat of Farrell.

Leading 8-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Iannetta crushed his seventh home run of the season over the center field wall.

The Tar Heels travel to Clemson this weekend for an important three-game ACC series against the Tigers. Daniel Moore will take the mound for Carolina in game one at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Game two will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon and the third and final game is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Monday.
