RALEIGH, N.C. - Chris Clem worked seven strong innings to get the win, and Steve Schmoll got his third save with two scoreless innings Friday night to lead Maryland to a 5-2 upset of fifth-ranked NC State in the first game of an Atlantic Coast Conference series at Doak Field.

Clem (4-6) entered the game with a 6.04 ERA, but scattered nine hits and allowed just two runs to pick up his fourth victory. He walked one and struck out three. Schmoll, who will most likely start for the Terps in the series finale on Sunday, allowed three hits, but stranded all three runners to get the save. He struck out three and did not issue a walk.

Michael Rogers (10-2) pitched well for NC State, but took the loss after allowing five runs, three of them earned, on eight hits in eight innings. He walked one and struck out 11 and might have had a better fate with some better defensive and offensive support. Defensively, the Wolfpack committed two errors and didn't play a stellar game in the field. Offensively, the Pack went 5-for-20 with men on base, and 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position. The top four batters in the lineup were a combined 1-for-18.

Justin Riley led off the bottom of the fourth inning for the Wolfpack with a double to right field, went to third on Colt Morton's groundout, and scored on Joe Gaetti's single through the right side of the infield, giving NC State the early lead at 1-0.

The lead did not last long. With one down in the top of the fifth, Jason Maxey lined a double over Gaetti's head in right field, and Kyle George's sharply hit roller went under Chad Orvella's glove at shortstop and rolled all the way to the wall for an RBI-double. Joe Sargent followed with his fourth home run of the season, driving in George ahead of him and giving Clem and the Terrapins a 3-1 lead.

The Wolfpack got a run back in the bottom of the seventh. Orvella beat out an infield single with one down, and Matt Camp singled to left. Pinch-hitter Lee Mezistrano doubled off the wall in left-center, but Orvella held up on the play, which prevented Camp from advancing beyond third base. Orvella scored to make it 3-2, but Clem got out of the inning by striking out Marc Maynor, walking Jeremy Dutton, and getting Riley on a fly ball to center field.

The Terps got some breathing room with two unearned runs in the top of the ninth. Justin Maxwell led off with a single up the middle, and Will Frazier reached when Riley, playing first base, could not hold onto Rogers's flip toss on Frazier's roller up the first-base line. Maxwell came all the way around to score, and Frazier went to second when Riley's throw home short-hopped catcher Colt Morton for a second error. Frazier went to third base on Brian Jarosinski's single to right and scored on Maxey's sacrifice fly to center field, giving the Terps and Schmoll a 5-2 lead.
